HONORS OF EXCELLENCE POINTS SYSTEM
Every year, a member's four top scoring entries will contribute to their Honors of Excellence status. These entries can be from the First and Second half members-only online competition and/or The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition. This is considered a cycle. The cycle will be displayed as two years in the "My Points" section of this site. e.g. 2016 - 2017. The reason two years are listed is because the 16 x 20 annual competition occurs in the calendar year following the First and Second Half competitions. Because of this, NO images entered in the annual competition can be entered again in the following First and Second Half Competitions, which occurs in the same calendar year.
A competition cycle commences with the 1st and 2nd Half Member only online competitions held each Spring and Fall and concludes with the 16x20 Annual Print Competition ending the following Winter. The current cycle is for the years 2018-2019.
16x20 Annual entries may include resubmission of the previous year's 1st and 2nd Half digital entries as prints. Once a cycle concludes, entries from the previous years may not participate in future competitions. At no point can entries from past competition cycles be re-entered.
Any entry can be entered into both the online competition and the annual competition, but it cannot be counted twice. If an image is entered into both the online and the Annual competition, then the higher score will count towards your Honors of Excellence title.
Top four scoring entries from the Annual competition per year may contribute to your Honors of Excellence designation. A maximum of two entries per year entered into the First Half or Second Half online competitions may contribute to your Honors of Excellence designation.
Points will be awarded as follows:
For entries that score:
79 or lower No points awarded.
80-84 A member will receive 1 point towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
85-89 A member will receive 1.5 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
90-94 A member will receive 2 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
95-99 A member will receive 2.5 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
100 A member will receive 3 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation /title.
A winner of a Grand Award achieved from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition (past Premiere Grand Awards don't count) receives 5 points towards their Honors of Excellence title. The entry that won the Grand Award will only receive 5 points. For example, if an entry received a silver distinction and then went on to win the Grand Award, then the print receives 5 points, not 6 points. In other words, the points for a particular entry do not accumulate if it also wins the Grand Award.
Please note that the winner of a Grand Award achieved from the First or Second half online Members Only Competition does not receive 5 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation. A Members Only Competition Grand Award will not contribute to the necessary Grand Award for a member to achieve Grand Master.
Grand Awards will only be awarded to categories that have multiple sub categories or whereby WPPI deems it is appropriate.
A multi-maker album entrant can elect to allocate up to half their points awarded from their multi-maker album award entries to other contributor(s) in 1 or 1/2 point increments by notifying Peter Berberian
of the allocation. Only the entrant or designee by the entrant can be awarded the Grand Award and its respective 5 points to their Honors of Excellence designation.
When a member accumulates 5 points, they will receive an Associate of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 20+ points) the member receives a Master of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 35+ points) the member receives a Double Master of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 50+ points accumulated), the member receives a Triple Master of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 65+ points accumulated), the member receives the Grand Master of WPPI title. NOTE: In order to actually receive the Grand Master of WPPI, the member must have also received 5 gold awards or above and at least 1 Grand Award from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition (past Premiere Grand Awards don't count) at some point during their time in the program. If they have not yet received a total of 5 gold awards and 1 grand award, if a member accumulates 80+ points in total regardless of scoring 5 gold awards or above and at least one Grand Award from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition the member receives the Grand Master of WPPI title.
The Grand Master of WPPI title holds a lot of prestige. It will be difficult to obtain because of the amount of skill and longevity that is needed to achieve it. But it is still attainable enough to encourage members to work towards that title. No one who earns this award will be unworthy of it—they will have earned it over a number of years and with consistently high scoring prints.
NOTE: If a member wins 5 Grand Awards achieved from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition (past Premiere Grand Awards don't count) during their time in the Honors of Excellence program, they automatically receive their Grand Master of WPPI title. Essentially bypassing all other titles if they have not yet achieved them. It's a very difficult achievement and will be an extremely rare occurrence but the rewards would be great, too, because a member bypasses everything and goes straight to Grand Master of WPPI. If a member wins 5 Grand Awards they are the master of the Grand Award, hence a Grand Master. This alternate way of achieving Grand Master status will hold as much prestige as achieving it by accumulating points.
When a member accumulates 130+ points in total the member receives a Double Grand Master of WPPI title including a trophy and a second Grand Master of WPPI token.
Upon achieving the title of Associate and above, a member will receive a WPPI necklace and medallion that will hold each achievement token as it is earned.
The achievement tokens will be color coded and labeled as follows:
- The first token will be yellow and have the word "Associate" written on it. A member receives the yellow token when they receive the Associate of WPPI title.
- The next token will be red and have the word "Master" written on it. A member receives the red token when they receive the Master of WPPI title.
- When a member receives the Double Master of WPPI, they receive a second red token. Similarly, when they receive the Triple Master of WPPI, they receive a third red token.
- The final token will be black and have the words "Grand Master" written on it. A member receives the black token and a trophy when they receive the Grand Master of WPPI title. A Grand Master of WPPI also receives a lifetime membership to WPPI and receives a lifetime pass to attend the WPPI convention (this pass is non-transferable). If present, a Grand Master will be able to give a short speech on the awards night if they wish.
- If a member achieves their Double Grand Master of WPPI designation, a member receives a second Grand Master black token.
