  1. There is no limit to the amount of entries one can submit. PLEASE NOTE: Only the top four scores from each contest cycle will contribute to your Honors of Excellence designation.
  2. There is no term limit on your entries. Your entries must be unique and not resemble any other of your previous entries.
  3. Entries that have been previously entered in the WPPI Annual: 16 x 20 Print, Album and Filmmaking may not be entered again.
  4. All judging is anonymous: no identifying studio signature or photographer name should be visible on the front of the image.
  5. Photographers may enter under a studio name, and specify themselves as the photographer who created the entry. When entering under a studio name, if the entry gets awarded, the studio and photographer will be given credit as the award recipient. The photographer also receives points toward their Honors of Excellence designation. If the studio pays for the entrant's membership and entry fees, and the photographer leaves the studio, both the studio and the photographer are allowed to promote the awards received. The photographer who leaves keeps their Honors of Excellence designation. If the entrant pays for their own entry fees and leaves the studio, only the photographer is allowed to promote the awards received.
  6. All processing, manipulation and printing or rendering must be done by the entrant or under their direct supervision. You may use a digital artist to retouch and/or print your work.
  7. In the submission process, entrants must mention the retoucher of their entry including yourself if you handled the post production.
  8. Choose the strongest image; no two entries shall be of the same subject, in the same location and in the same category. You may enter an individual photograph in the print competition and include it with an album entry
  9. No images taken at a workshop or seminar, under the guidance of an instructor are eligible to be entered into the competition.
  10. All entries require you to upload the original RAW or unedited JPG file. This allows us to verify that your entry is in the appropriate category and follows category rules.
  11. Composites allowed: Head, face or body part swaps, etc. from a different exposure are allowed. Two exposures of the same scene to remove an assistant is allowed. If an entry consists of a series of images or a collage, then each image must be matted or framed separately.
    • Composites are NOT allowed in the Photojournalism or In-Camera Artistry division
    • Only allowed in the Creative Division, composites including mirrioring part or half an image, cloning people or multiplying objects and stitching or combining two or more images together to form a panorama.
Each entry must be 100% photographic in origin and captured by the entrant.

    Allowed (All Categories Except Photojournalism)
    • Global texture screens are allowed on images.
    • Non-photographic filters and actions produced by third parties that enhance characteristics of an image but do not add elements.
    • Historical photos or artistic elements not created by the artist that are visible in an entry are allowed but cannot exceed 20% of the album submission.
    Allowed (Album and Creative Only)
    • Non-photographic elements like text, patterns, frames and motifs.
    Not Allowed
    • No stock images or any element not created by the entrant are allowed.
  12. Subjects that are featured in an image that has previously placed first, second or third in The Annual: 16x20 Print and Filmmaking Competition may be used and entered again by the same photographer, but are not eligible to win first place, second place, third place or Grand Award in current competition. The points that the entry scores will only contribute to your Honors of Excellence designation. This is to encourage entrants to photograph a diversity of subjects for continued growth. This rule does not apply to album categories.
  13. Disqualifications can include:
    • Plagiarism (knowingly or subconsciously): Copying a photograph where ALL or a majority of the elements are exactly the same (i.e., same subject matter, pose, location, concept, crop, finishing, etc.) may be considered plagiarism if not enough elements are considered different.
    • Images pornographic in nature will not be allowed.
    • If an entrant is proven to knowingly break the rules for an unfair advantage, the entrant will be banned from entering the cometition for one year and 10 points will be deducted from their Honors of Excellence designation.
        This does not include:
      1. Copying or emulating a pose, style or concept.
      2. Emulating elements from a painting in a photograph.
  14. Entries must score a minimum of 80 to be eligible to win first, second or third place.
  15. WPPI is not obliged to nominate a first, second or third place in every category if the entries are not deemed strong enough to represent the category.
  16. WPPI reserves the right to prejudge entries before the convention to ensure the remaining entries be judged in the allocated time during the convention. All prejudged entries will receive the same respect and consideration.

WPPI The Annual 2018
The program's main goal is to encourage, educate and motivate photographers to be constantly committed to their craft. By entering the competition, every entrant receives priceless feedback and the opportunity to be recognized by their peers for their achievements. Attending the live judging is a fun and exciting way to share your work.
Win a category, win a Grand Award, receive a trophy!
You could become a "Grand Master" of WPPI, the organization's highest honor!
HONORS OF EXCELLENCE POINTS SYSTEM
Every year, a member's four top scoring entries will contribute to their Honors of Excellence status. These entries can be from the First and Second half members-only online competition and/or The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition. This is considered a cycle. The cycle will be displayed as two years in the "My Points" section of this site. e.g. 2016 - 2017. The reason two years are listed is because the 16 x 20 annual competition occurs in the calendar year following the First and Second Half competitions. Because of this, NO images entered in the annual competition can be entered again in the following First and Second Half Competitions, which occurs in the same calendar year.
A competition cycle commences with the 1st and 2nd Half Member only online competitions held each Spring and Fall and concludes with the 16x20 Annual Print Competition ending the following Winter. The current cycle is for the years 2018-2019.
16x20 Annual entries may include resubmission of the previous year's 1st and 2nd Half digital entries as prints. Once a cycle concludes, entries from the previous years may not participate in future competitions. At no point can entries from past competition cycles be re-entered.
Any entry can be entered into both the online competition and the annual competition, but it cannot be counted twice. If an image is entered into both the online and the Annual competition, then the higher score will count towards your Honors of Excellence title.
Top four scoring entries from the Annual competition per year may contribute to your Honors of Excellence designation. A maximum of two entries per year entered into the First Half or Second Half online competitions may contribute to your Honors of Excellence designation.
Points will be awarded as follows:
For entries that score:
79 or lower No points awarded.
80-84 A member will receive 1 point towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
85-89 A member will receive 1.5 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
90-94 A member will receive 2 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
95-99 A member will receive 2.5 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation/title.
100 A member will receive 3 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation /title.
A winner of a Grand Award achieved from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition (past Premiere Grand Awards don't count) receives 5 points towards their Honors of Excellence title. The entry that won the Grand Award will only receive 5 points. For example, if an entry received a silver distinction and then went on to win the Grand Award, then the print receives 5 points, not 6 points. In other words, the points for a particular entry do not accumulate if it also wins the Grand Award.
Please note that the winner of a Grand Award achieved from the First or Second half online Members Only Competition does not receive 5 points towards their Honors of Excellence designation. A Members Only Competition Grand Award will not contribute to the necessary Grand Award for a member to achieve Grand Master.
Grand Awards will only be awarded to categories that have multiple sub categories or whereby WPPI deems it is appropriate.
A multi-maker album entrant can elect to allocate up to half their points awarded from their multi-maker album award entries to other contributor(s) in 1 or 1/2 point increments by notifying Peter Berberian of the allocation. Only the entrant or designee by the entrant can be awarded the Grand Award and its respective 5 points to their Honors of Excellence designation.
TITLES/DESIGNATIONS
Titles:
When a member accumulates 5 points, they will receive an Associate of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 20+ points) the member receives a Master of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 35+ points) the member receives a Double Master of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 50+ points accumulated), the member receives a Triple Master of WPPI title.
When a member accumulates 15 additional points (for a total of 65+ points accumulated), the member receives the Grand Master of WPPI title. NOTE: In order to actually receive the Grand Master of WPPI, the member must have also received 5 gold awards or above and at least 1 Grand Award from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition (past Premiere Grand Awards don't count) at some point during their time in the program. If they have not yet received a total of 5 gold awards and 1 grand award, if a member accumulates 80+ points in total regardless of scoring 5 gold awards or above and at least one Grand Award from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition the member receives the Grand Master of WPPI title.
The Grand Master of WPPI title holds a lot of prestige. It will be difficult to obtain because of the amount of skill and longevity that is needed to achieve it. But it is still attainable enough to encourage members to work towards that title. No one who earns this award will be unworthy of it—they will have earned it over a number of years and with consistently high scoring prints.
NOTE: If a member wins 5 Grand Awards achieved from The Annual: 16x20 Print, Album and Filmmaking Competition (past Premiere Grand Awards don't count) during their time in the Honors of Excellence program, they automatically receive their Grand Master of WPPI title. Essentially bypassing all other titles if they have not yet achieved them. It's a very difficult achievement and will be an extremely rare occurrence but the rewards would be great, too, because a member bypasses everything and goes straight to Grand Master of WPPI. If a member wins 5 Grand Awards they are the master of the Grand Award, hence a Grand Master. This alternate way of achieving Grand Master status will hold as much prestige as achieving it by accumulating points.
When a member accumulates 130+ points in total the member receives a Double Grand Master of WPPI title including a trophy and a second Grand Master of WPPI token.
Upon achieving the title of Associate and above, a member will receive a WPPI necklace and medallion that will hold each achievement token as it is earned.
The achievement tokens will be color coded and labeled as follows:
  • The first token will be yellow and have the word "Associate" written on it. A member receives the yellow token when they receive the Associate of WPPI title.
  • The next token will be red and have the word "Master" written on it. A member receives the red token when they receive the Master of WPPI title.
  • When a member receives the Double Master of WPPI, they receive a second red token. Similarly, when they receive the Triple Master of WPPI, they receive a third red token.
  • The final token will be black and have the words "Grand Master" written on it. A member receives the black token and a trophy when they receive the Grand Master of WPPI title. A Grand Master of WPPI also receives a lifetime membership to WPPI and receives a lifetime pass to attend the WPPI convention (this pass is non-transferable). If present, a Grand Master will be able to give a short speech on the awards night if they wish.
  • If a member achieves their Double Grand Master of WPPI designation, a member receives a second Grand Master black token.

JUDGING
Qualified judges of WPPI will judge prints in the competition for photographic artistry and craftsmanship. The decision of the judges is final. Contest consists of a panel of judges reviewing prints on display and an average score being determined. Winners will be selected by the judging panel at the end of the individual scoring round. Once an entry has been judged, the score for that entry is final. An entry cannot be brought back to the panel and re-judged. Decisions of the judges are final and binding. Third, Second, First Place and Grand Award winners will be announced at the WPPI Awards of Excellence Ceremony held on Friday evening, March 1, 2019 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. Plan to be present to celebrate with us from 6:00 PM until 10:00PM.
A judge may not judge an image in which they have been directly involved in the post production of the image.
A judge may judge an image whose creator is known to them if they are able to submit an unbiased score.
A judge should not refrain from judging an entry where they assume they know the creator but they may step down if appropriate. An unbiased score must be given.
First place winners from each Wedding, Pre-Wedding, Photojournalism, Portrait, In Camera Artistry, Creative and Filmmaking Division categories will be eligible to win the Grand Award in their respective divisions.
Every year, a member's top four scoring entries will contribute to their Honors of Excellence status.

The photograph must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the Sponsor/WPPI, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. Photographs deemed inappropriate will be disqualified.

  4. JUDGING:
In several rooms, over two full days, a jury chairperson is in charge of the room directing a proctor (computer operator) to manage the scoring. Judges use their mobile phones and then vote on their phones. Once the scores are tabulated the proctor will display the score which is subject to certain rule sets (see category specific rules). The score is not just the average all the time, it can be a majority rise or fall based on 3 judges being in a judging bracket higher or lower than the average. There are rules associated with the challenge process and it controls which judges can challenge and which can't challenge indicating so on their control panel. The judges issue challenges, discuss the print, film or digital image(s) and vote again. The final score is approved by the proctor which triggers the print handlers for non-digital categories to swap the prints out. At the end of each category, the room is cleared and the jury chair, judges, print handlers and proctors bring up the finalists to be rejudged for first second third fourth and fifth place. Only the finalists are presented which are the top 5 and equal fifth scoring images.
Once the division is complete one (1) Grand Award is selected. All scores are processed after the event for accuracy and loaded into the system for display to entrants. First, second third and grand awards are not announced until the awards night.
